Maytag Refrigerator Recall - What You Need To Know

Refrigerators with more than just a Maytag name are being recalled.  Jenn-Air, Magic Chef and Amana are some of the other famous brand names that have an urgent recall notice after being linked to more than 40 fires.

Consumers can not return the refrigerators.  Instead, the company has agreed to provide for in-home repairs of all affected models.  Expect a busy telephone number, but consumers should call Maytag soon to see if their refrigerator is part of the recall.  A list of impacted models is below.  Units made between 2001 and 2004 are affected, but that’s the manufacturing, not the sales, date.  Call to be sure.

And while many recalls may be classed as a nuisance or minor risk, this Maytag refrigerator recall is already responsible for 16 fires causing measurable damage, including what the government called “extensive kitchen damage”.

The number to call Maytag any time is:  (866) 533-9817

Maytag refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are not affected. Some that are can be found in this chart:

BEWARE OF THE COMPRESSOR REPLACEMENT TO FIX THE PROBLEM - IT’S A JOKE. our compressor was replaced april 17th. we noticed that the fridge was never as cold after that and it kept getting warmer and warmer. we kept setting the temp colder and colder till we hit the max. had a roast and a 6 pack of chicken breasts, plus all our dairy products go bad over the weekend. i put a thermometer in the fridge yesterday and checked it this morning - 70 degrees! we’ve lost everything. checked the freezer - ice cream is runny and the freeze pops are liquid. I suppose we’ll lose everything in there, too. when i called the company who replaced the compressor, they said that a lot of people have experienced ‘problems’ after the compressor replacement, so all calls have to go directly to maytag so they can keep track of the issues. (FYI: the phone number to report problems after the recall service has been done is 866.949.0676) after being transferred 4 times for ‘escalation’, they finally told me someone will be out tomorrow between 8 and 5. she said if they determine it’s not related to the compressor replacement, the cost is on us. gee - what do you think the verdict on that will be?? of course the fridge has a 5 year warranty and we just hit 6 years. can’t win. best of luck to all dealing with this. baysunset

Maytag is being disengenuous regarding its commitment to repair and rectify this fire hazard.
My refrigerator (which is on the recall fire hazard list) is recessed in cabinetry. When a repairman arrived he refused to pull it out unless I signed a waiver absolving him of any damge caused by him to get to the rear of the refrigerator. When I refused to sign the document, he left without making the repair. In a telephone conversation he later stated that “it was a two man job and Maytag would only pay for one man” When this information was brought to the attention of a Maytag representative, the representative insisted that the form be signed or as an alternative that I accept the sum of $75 in full satisfaction of Maytag’s recall/repair obligation. It also made no difference to Maytag that I and my husband are senior citizens and are unable to personally remove the refrigerator so it can be repaired. This does not seem to be a good faith attempt by Maytag to fulfill its recall obligation.
If anyone has had a similar experience, please let me know.

I thought I was the only one experiencing this problem. I too had my Jenn Air fridge serviced because of the recall (on Monday). And Tuesay morning, the temperature got warmer and warmer. After numerous calls to Whirlpool head office and the local service center, we finally get a ticket open for a technician to come by on Thursday (this was the earliest the can schedule). This is after the aggrevation of having someone from neither the head office or the local service center take responsibility to rectify the problem. And yes, the suggested at first I pay for this repair, but after some back and forth, the head office offered to obsorb the cost.
I had to throw away the entire contents of my fridge and freezer as my meats thawed away and food was spoiled after incubating in this fridge for 3 days.
To make a long story short, Thursday rolls around and the technician does not show. Yes, you are reading correctly. He just doesn’t show up. I had to take time off work to be home to deal with this and no one from Whirlpool seems to care.

I am waiting for a technician to show up today, but I’m not holding my breath.

My fridge was working perfectly fine prior to this recall notice.

I am boycotting Whirlpool products and have no faith in this company despite how they market themselves as a customer oriented and reliable provider.

YES, BEWARE OF RECALL REPAIR. a similar situation happened to me too. A&E factory came out to the house and did the recall repair and the next day it was dripping and puddling on the floor. we just thought this was the result of it being off and being empty (losing hundreds of dollars in food) but a few days later i temped the fridge and it was 59degrees. i called the maytag recall line again and were very willing to send someone else out but when he got here he said it was not covered and he could order the part but he wanted $200 for the visit which, of course, we refused. the problem is that maytag designed the fridge with an energy efficient motor that is actually too small for the size of the fridge. i know this because it is the second time the motor blew and when the first maytag certified repairman came he told me this and put in the appropriate (bigger) “non-energy efficient” motor that is capable of cooling a fridge this size. so we bought two motors at that time and he, being a local guy” covered the visit for our troubles. i think their fridge is a lemon and i now just want my $850 dollars back. but this time MY FRIDGE WAS WORKING-they came to repair something-AND NOW IT IS NOT. i am going to fight tooth and nail with these guys. whirlpool now owns maytag and they are the ones refusing the coverage on the repair being all removed and high and mighty about it. but we’ll see. wish me luck.

I can’t believe this. My side-by-side was working fine - no problems. Then we call the repairman out because of the fire hazard recall - and the next day the frig quits working! We call them back and of course they say the ‘new’ problem is not related and Maytag refuses to cover it! It costs us $287 to fix it!!!! Plus we lost food to boot. I am so mad I can hardly type this!!! I have read others experiencing the same thing. Isn’t there something we can do???

Same issue with our Maytag frige. The guy came to replace the recall part and it’s about a month later and the frige has started to get warm. We turned it to the coldest setting and it’s still warm. I think I’ll have to put a thermometer in it to be sure we’re not eating food that’s spoiling.

I’ve read the thread above and ditto - frig was working perfectly for 6 years and after recall work it has died. Lost all food and am waiting 4 days for a tech who will likely swap out the same part for the same result. I told the Maytag rep that I read up on the extent of this issue and asked what their plan B was. She acknowledged they were aware of the recall failures and there was no plan B. I’m no attorney but this sounds like the makings a class action lawsuit.

I have just lodged a formal complaint with my state’s attorney general and Better Business Bureau. I recommend that all people affected by this recall “repair” do the same. Hopefully this will help build some leverage to be can be used for a just solution to the true defect.
